“MY
LORD AND MY GOD!”
The Doubt of Thomas
We all relate so
easily to Thomas. He is the one who says out loud what we so
often think to ourselves: "I can't believe it all -
it's just too much!" If I can place my fingers in the wounds
in His hands; if I can place my fingers in the wound of His side
— then I'll believe. In the beautiful print above, Thomas is
placing his fingers in the wound of Jesus and saying:
"My Lord and My God!"
Part of our journey
of faith is doubt. There are times when we find it very hard to
believe in a God of love who really is concerned about us. So
many seem to have to leave the Church for awhile before they can
really say: "I believe." Many seem to need a
"sabbatical” from the Church before they can put the Church's
teaching and laws into the context of a living faith in Jesus.
Don't we all struggle with that?
But when we really
stick with the struggle and work through the doubts we come to
that moment when with Thomas we can say: "My Lord and my
God!" When we do that our faith becomes stronger and more
beautiful than it was before. We no longer believe like little
children on the word of someone else, but we believe because We
believe. That kind of faith is worth all the struggling because
once we come to it no one can ever take it away from us.
He is truly risen.
Alleluia!
