"Is There Anyone
Among You
Who is Sick"
St. James
This quote from St. James
is meant to be an invitation to anyone who is ill and homebound (and
their families) to call the Church so that the sick person may receive
the Sacraments at home. It is the right of every Catholic to receive the
Sacraments when they are ill and the duty of the family to call the
Church to let us know about anyone ~ adult or child who is ill.
Sometimes beautiful
Catholics spend months and years without the consolation of Jesus and
the Church because the family and/or friends neglected to call us.
Please let us know. It is always a privilege to bring Jesus to our dear
family at home.
Each week you will find a
form in the bulletin to be filled out to alert us of someone who is ill
at home and should be visited. It is very distressing to learn of
parishioners who are sometimes homebound for months or even years, and
no one informs us. Frequently families will say that they don't want to
frighten the sick person by calling for the priest, but in reality it is
the difficulty the family might have in dealing with the illness and
mortality of a sick loved one.
Please don't hesitate to
call us if someone is seriously or terminally ill, or homebound because of
age or a chronic or temporary indisposition. It is a privilege and a joy
for your Parish to minister to its parishioners when they are ill. They
are the most important members of the Parish.
Please don't allow yourself
or the sick person to put off calling the Church because you or they say
or think, "Oh, I didn't go to Church when I was well and now I'm calling
them when I'm sick and need something." That is called "stinky thinking."
It is not Christian and it delights the Evil One who will do anything
(even use seemingly pious thoughts) to keep us from God's Love. The one
away from the Church the longest is the most loved by God.
So please, when and if the
need arises, fill out the homebound form to alert us to those who need the
Parish Ministry to the Sick. You may drop it off at the Parish Center,
mail it to us, or place it in the collection basket on Sunday, or just
call at 667-4044
